The Infamous Green Truck
It all began that summer when my youth group was trying to raise money to go to King’s Dominion. We had three fundraisers planned. The first one was an art auction and the second was a cookie bake sale. Both were very successful. The third fundraiser was a carwash. This was something that none of us had ever done before, but we were all extremely excited about it. It took loads of preparation to get started and even more work to finish it.
My friends and I found a local mechanic who let us hold the carwash at his shop downtown. We sold tickets at five dollars apiece to friends and family. This way, we thought, we would have an idea as to how many cars we would actually be washing. We bought and gathered all the materials needed and we met on a beautiful Friday evening in June. Everyone of the youth group showed up - some even under coercion. We started out slowly, but the business picked up fast! Pretty soon, we had cars lined up waiting for us to wash them. We probably could have kept up a good pace, except for the BIG GREEN TRUCK!
The big green truck was actually a giant farm truck that had at least four coats of dirt stuck on it. The roof of the cab was taller than any of us could have reached, even if we stood on the edge of the bed of the car. There were four of us who originally began washing this mint green beast. We lathered, rinsed, and repeated many times. Still - the truck was dirty. The other fellow groups abandoned their cars to help us with this monster. Pretty soon, everyone (teachers, pastors, and parents) were helping. It was no use. It was hopeless. We had to let it go. In our hearts, the youth group believed the owner of this BIG GREEN TRUCK had gotten her five dollars worth.
I learned a lot from that carwash. I learned that misery really does love company. If you’re suffering, and someone is suffering too, it’s much better to suffer together. I also learned that working on a hard project is easier when you have your friends there to help. The most important thing I learned, though, was never to do a carwash again; or if a BIG GREEN TRUCK comes to your carwash - RUN!
